Can I make improvements to my shared ownership property?

If you are intending to make any improvements to the structure of the home, or any alterations to the home, you will have to obtain written permission from the housing association / local authority / social landlord or whoever owns the other share of the home. Once this permission has been given , only then can you make improvements to the property as long as they are within what has the permission granted.If it is structural then you may also need to seek permission from your local council also, however structural changes are seldom given unless you own a very large percentage of the property.When you purchase a home under the shared ownership scheme, you will be responsible for all the upkeep and maintenance of your property. If the upkeep of the property is done by the housing association / local authority / social landlord, your solicitor will have adviced you when you purchased the property of the service charges that will be payable by yourself to the landlord for the upkeep of the property.If you do not ask for permission the landlord can make you put the poperty back to its original condition at your cost.
