What changes in lifestyle should I expect?

When deciding to move abroad you should research what the lifestyle in the preferred destination will be like, to see if you will be able to fit in with that lifestyle. There are several factors that will affect the lifestyle at an overseas destination. These include the language , currency, transport, education, health care, the property, employment. Language is vital if you want to travel around a country , even though English is spoken in most places you should not assume that it will be sufficient to get by without trying to grasp the basics of the countries language. Currency is important as you will be changing your money into the local currency. It is important to plan ahead, research the economy and historical trends of the currency before converting large amounts. If the currency is unstable you may be exposed to potential exchange rate risks. Transport can be a factor, if you prefer to drive then you will need to learn the local rules and regulations and according to the choice of the destination this can change significantly from those of the uk. However if you choose to use public transport, then you need to look at the available services, like trams, trains, buses etc, how good they are and how accessible they are. You need to take into account that the quality of the service will be different from that in the UK and customs may be different so you will need to learn these too. Education is an important factor especially if you have children, you need to look at the standards of education in the destination. There may be costs for education in the new destination which is different to when you compare this to the UK where education is free. If you would like your children to follow the British curriculum then you may need to send them to an international school, these are situated in most countries in major cities. Health care too is a very important factor, you need to be able to find the necessary health care ie, are there local GP’s , local health centres and pharmacies etc. once again health care in other countries may not be the same as what you are used to in the UK so you will need to learn how to use them and where to find them and how easily accessible they are. Most countries have private health care, you may find that the private health care systems are better than the public ones. Another issue is obtaining work in the destination you are planning to live in. Work ethics may be different and you will most likely have to learn the local language. You will need to realise that working conditions may differ than they are in the UK. You may need to go on training course for this in some cases; pay may be lower depending on the country, so you need to adjust to this.
